➸ NYC in your living room

Even though it wasn’t love at first sight, my favourite city on this planet earth is New York City. A lot of crazy and great memories happened there. So what is the best way to keep these special moments in your everyday life? Of course you can hang up pictures. But another nice option are books. I am obsessed with books. But I am even more obsessed with books about New York City. Therefore, I collected a few of them (and I bet these aren’t the last ones) and today I want to share them with all of you.

Something for everyday: table calendar

This is a calendar with pictures and quotes about the City for every day of the year. The perfect little thing to cheer your day up in the morning or to give you a break from work. This one is the “TASCHEN365, Day-by-Day, New York” from  “Taschen Verlag.

Something for the kitchen: NY Cooking book.

“New YorkCult receipts”,  from Murdoch Books , has all the classic NYC cooking recipes in it. You can choose from a classic cheeseburger, Jewish food to fancy Asian soup. Yummy! … and I think I already found my next cooking book: “I heart NY” 

Something for the eyes: coffee-table books

Flick through these kinds of books and you end up discovering a new place you want to go to or having a nostalgic trip back to the places you’ve been before. I don’t mind either of them.

Here are the three coffee-table books I collected so far: The first one is from “Dumont”

The last book is about the street art of Banksy ( I think you heard of him) in New York, “Banksy in New York” from “Carnage NYC”.

Something for the next trip: Travel guides

When you love the City just like me, you always wanna plan your next trip, even when you don’t know when it’s gonna happen!  

Here I have two out of many options for you:  the New York guide from “Dorling Kinsley”  or a very old one “ Book of New York Walks”from the Time Out/ Penguin. This is a very old one I got from a flea market, but I love it.

➸ My memories of 9/11

I can’t believe it has already been 15 years. I remember the 11^th September 2001 so bright and clear. It was my first day in high school, a pretty exciting day for my 10-year-old me. In the evening - we were about to have dinner - when a family friend came over and just mumbled with a pale face that we had to turn on the TV. There we stood in our living room, starring at our tube TV. I still get goose bumps when I remember this situation. I had never seen my parents speechless and scared like this before. I didn’t understand the whole situation, but knew something was terribly wrong.

In the year 2011 I’ve set _ foot in the City for the first time and visited - among other sights - Ground Zero. At this time there was no new skyscraper yet, just a lot of excavators and bulldozers. I felt the sadness and the hole which was left behind in this place, even I never had the chance to see the Twin Towers in real life. It just was not literally a hole in the island, it was and still is a big hole in its soul.

Since then I’ve kind of seen the One World Centre growing up. It went from a _hole to a little building to a huge new monument. Next time I am back in Manhattan I will definitely go up the One World Trade Centre and check out the view. 

Maybe the hole was covered, but it will always be the darkest day in Manhattan’s history. Let's remember the ones who lost their lives and try to have an even more positive attitude. Maybe we can change some of the hate to something positive and nice :).  

New York City im Herbst – mein Geheimtipp: Coney Island

 An NYC kann man zu jeder Jahreszeit sein Herz verlieren. Aber ich finde, dass es besonders schnell im Herbst passiert, denn dann versprüht die Stadt einen noch besondereren Charme als sonst ( wenn das überhaupt geht).

Ich kann euch gar nicht genau beschreiben, warum mich die Stadt im Herbst so verzaubert. Aber die goldenen Blätter im Central Park und der Indian Summer spielen auf jeden Fall eine Rolle. Für alle, die mit dem Begriff „Indian Summer“ nichts anfangen können: dies ist die Jahreszeit, in der es noch einmal richtige lauwarme Spätsommertage gibt, die Blätter zwischen rot und braun schweben und die Sonne alles in ein außergewöhnliches Licht taucht. Eigentlich ist dieses Wetterphänomen in den Newengland-Staaten zu finden, aber NYC hat Glück und bekommt immer etwas davon ab.

Ich liebe es durch die Straßen zu schlendern, mit den ersten Halloween Süßigkeiten und zuzusehen, wie überall lauter Strohballen und Kürbisse vor den Geschäften auftauchen. Der Herbst wird, wie jede andere Jahreszeit auch in den USA, einfach ausreichend zelebriert. Man hat nicht das Gefühl sofort vom Sommer in den Winter zu fallen.

Aber nun zu meinem Tipp: steigt in die orange (D, F) oder in die gelbe (N,Q) Subway Richtung Brooklyn. Nach ca. einer Stunde Fahrt, gelangt ihr an die Haltestelle Coney Island – Stillwell Avenue. Wenn man hier aus der Bahn steigt, hat man das Gefühl in einer Welt zwischen NYC und Kalifornien zu hängen. Willkommen auf Coney Island! 

Es gibt eine lange Promenade am Strand entlang. Hinter dem Holzplankenweg liegt der berühmt-berüchtigte Vergnügungspark. Es ist ein perfekter Tagesausflug, um noch einmal die Seele am Meer baumeln zu lassen und vielleicht ein wenig der Hektik von Manhattan zu entfliehen. Der Vergnügungspark ist natürlich passend im Herbstthema geschmückt und lädt freundlich ein, auch mal eine Runde auf der Achterbahn zu drehen oder sich im Labyrinth zu verirren.

Wenn ihr genug vom Karussell fahren habt, könnt ihr euch, das vielleicht letzte Waffeleis des Jahres gönnen. Zu  empfehlen ist „Coney’s Cones – Homemade Gelato“. Glaubt mir diese Kugeln sind sogar für amerikanische Verhältnisse riesig... und sau lecker. Falls das Wetter dann doch mal schlechter sein sollte, gibt es auch ein kleines Aquarium an der Promenade.

Zum Strand kann man nur sagen: gepflegt, weicher Sand, es gibt kostenlose öffentliche WCs (Hygiene ist okay). Gut geeignet für einen Strandtag.

Vielleicht hat ja jemand von euch einen Tipp, was genau das für eine Kreatur war! Der Panzer erinnert leicht an einen Helm, und vor allem war es riesig.

Zwischen Strand und U-Bahn befinden sich noch einig kleine Geschäfte im Retro-Look. Nur darf man um diese Jahreszeit nicht mehr all zu viel erwarten, da die meisten auf Grund von Besuchermangel schon für den Winter geschlossen haben. Aber die bunten Häuser und bemalten Wände lassen sich auch so gut bestaunen. 

Also, wer ein bisschen Abwechslung von Hochhäusern sucht, aber trotzdem noch etwas entdecken mag, ist auf Coney Island genau richtig!
